Tactile Playgrounds

WEEK 7

FUNCTIONALITY. HOW?

INFRASTRUCTURE + MAP IDEATION

  • 1.

The first idea is to have each object placed on top of a “connector”. This connector can attach and detach itself to/from another piece—similar to a puzzle.

  • 2.

The second idea is to have a board with holes allowing the user to place the objects wherever they want on top. The objects have a connector that will reach the bottom where the circuit will be placed.

  • 3.

The third idea is to have a board with a carved-put path where the users can slot in the objects and place them according to how their environment is.

  • Determining the Best Solution

Among the three ideas, I think that idea #3 is the most difficult to achieve when it comes to the technical aspect. Making a path for slotting the objects is complex because the board must be able to identify the objects and their behaviours accordingly and accurately.

Idea #1 could work. However, the required resources and time for its implementation are not achievable due to the necessity of customising and applying a connector to each individual object, as well as me as a student with not a lot of experience within tech.

In my opinion, idea #2 is probably the most achievable one.

  • Questions to further think about:

    1.

How can the Arduino know which behaviour to do?

    2.

How many objects will there be on the map?

    3.

Should each object be technically equipped, or should the connector/board be the one which is technically responsible?

TIMELINE FOR WEEK 9 - 13

WEEK / PRESENTATION FEEDBACK

1.

How will the technicality work for each of the sections/map?

2.

Buy wires and do some soldering to make something more polished.

3.

Think about what materials to use. Wood, acrylics, cardboard? Textures?

WEEKLY ROUNDUP

I am beginning to realise the extent of work required for this project. There are many aspects that need to be carefully considered for everything to progress and work out smoothly. To ensure that all goes according to plan, I will utilise the timeline to effectively manage my time, ideally staying ahead of schedule.
